What is “Coalitions 4 Success”?

Coalitions 4 Success is a jointly – sponsored program between the University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Watson School of Education/College of Arts and Sciences, and coalition partner school districts of Brunswick, Pender and New Hanover Counties in Southeastern North Carolina.

Coalitions 4 Success is designed to help fulfill the mission of the federal “No Child Left Behind” legislation by providing partnerships between the Watson School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences as well as with school systems with large population of students in poverty. The goal of Coalitions 4 Success is to ensure the success of at-risk, diverse student populations, specifically those identified as Limited English Proficiency (LEP). The partnership project will focus on improving teachers’ and principals attitudes, knowledge, skills and abilities in working with at-risk students and diversity.

Coalitions 4 Success is organized to unite a coalition of highly qualified educators to provide professional development opportunities to directly benefit thirty educators from Brunswick, Pender and New Hanover Counties. The focus is to ensure the regions’ capacity to improve the success of an increasingly diverse and at-risk population of students. Brunswick County School district was identified as high-need and at-risk according to census data related to poverty and a posting on the NC Quest website. Pender and New Hanover County school districts were identified as high need by their district administrators. The five high LEP schools selected for participation are North Brunswick, West Brunswick, Heide Trask, Pender and New Hanover High School.
