CIS Add-on Licensure


Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for consideration for the add-on licensure option, candidates must have:

  1. A master’s degree from an accredited university
  2. A current North Carolina educator’s license

Application Process:

To apply for the add-on licensure program, candidates must complete the following:

  1. An application for non-degree status in the UNCW Graduate School http://www.uncw.edu/grad_info/ 
  2. A written statement of interest, description of experience as an educator, and copy of current North Carolina licensure (enclose with application) Admissions decisions are based on review of all components listed above. Completed application packets must be received 60 days prior to the desired semester of admission (Fall, Spring, or Summer).

Program of Study:

Candidates must complete 18 hours of coursework beyond the initial master’s degree from the selected courses below. In some cases, up to six hours of relevant coursework previously taken at the master’s level within the last five years may count towards the licensure requirements. Courses may be selected from:

EDN 513 Leadership for Learning (3)

EDN 520 Instructional Development (3)

EDN 530 Curriculum (3)
or
EDN 515 Curriculum for School Leaders (3)

EDN 567 Learning-Centered Supervision (3)
and
EDN 578 Practicum in Learning-Centered Supervision (3)

Electives

EDN 523 Research in Education (3)
EDN 564 Policy Formulation as a Systemic Process (3)
EDN 568 Educational Program Design and Evaluation (3)
EDN 582 Organization Theory (3)

NOTE: Other electives to complete the 18 hours may be approved by the advisor.

Candidates must complete and pass the Praxis II licensure examination required by the state of North Carolina: Educational Leadership: Administration and Supervision #10410 (UNCW must be listed as a score recipient.)

Licensure Recommendation:

Upon completion of the program of study and receipt of passing Praxis II scores, candidates should schedule an appointment with Dr. Carol Chase Thomas, Associate Dean for Academic Programs (910 962-4142), to complete the paperwork for add-on licensure.
