Welcome to the Elementary Education Program

The Elementary Education Program Area offers a program leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and licensure to teach grades K-6. We also offer a Master’s of Education degree in Elementary Education.

The goal of the Elementary Education program at UNCW is to assist in providing an appropriate education for children in grades K-6 through the preparation of teachers who are well educated and professionally competent. The conceptual framework for the elementary education program is one which is common to all teacher education programs at UNCW: Watson School of Education develops highly competent and effective professionals to serve in educational leadership roles.

Now Accepting Applications!!!

The Master of Education in Elementary Education (M.Ed.) program is now accepting applicants for a new Cohort to begin in Summer II 2011.  Deadline to apply is April 15, 2011.  This program is designed for experienced teachers and admission is limited to students that (1) have successfully completed a student teaching internship and (2) hold or are eligible for a North Carolina teaching license

Courses in the program will be offered online or via Distance Learning Technology in New Hanover, Onslow, and Brunswick Counties.  Classes are offered in the evening and should work for those teaching full-time in the public schools.  Because this is a Cohort program, students must complete courses in the sequence offered.  Students that miss one or more courses in the sequence may not be able to complete them at a later date.  Two courses (6 semester hours) are offered each semester.  Graduation is expected in Summer II 2013 for students successfully completing the 39 hour program.

To apply to the program, you will need to complete an online application through the graduate school.  It will require a written statement of interest, official GRE or MAT scores, official transcripts from your undergraduate program(s), and three written recommendations.  You will find the electronic application and information concerning tuition and fees on the UNCW Graduate School website:  http://uncw.edu/gradschool/index.htm When the application is complete, it will be forwarded from the Graduate School to the Watson School of Education for consideration.
