Photo of Dr. Karen Wetherill

Karen S. Wetherill, Ed.D. is the Associate Dean for External Programs and Organizational Development for the Watson School of Education. She has extensive grant administration and investigative experience with long and strong records of innovative teacher preparation and leadership abilities. Dr. Wetherill Will serve as an instructional resource for this grant and she provides instructional input and oversight for all Watson School of Education grant programs.

Photo of Diane Calhoun

Diane Calhoun, M.Ed. is the Director of the Watson School of Education Professional Development System, a university-school partnership with ten school systems and over 100 schools. She has team taught the graduate courses in supervision and coaching, and took a leadership role in the implementation of study group and developing teacher leadership in a previous grant. Ms. Calhoun’s primary role with this grant is Project Director.  She will also be instructing, overseeing study groups and mentoring.

Photo of Jimmy Reeves

Dr. Jimmy Reeves received his Ph.D from Northeastern University in Chemistry.  He currently teaches a distance learning general chemistry course including a laboratory component designed to be done at home (Kitchen Chemistry).  His further contributions include a creation of distance learning graduate chemistry courses for  teachers and non-traditional students.  Dr. Reeves implements a strong integration of technology into his curriculum.  He is the Co-Chair of the General Chemistry Laboratory Exam Committee.

Photo of Dr. Roney

Kathleen Roney, Ed. D. has been an educator for over 25 years—as secondary and middle grades’ teacher, middle school principal, and university teacher educator. In addition to teaching, Kathy’s responsibilities at the Watson School for Education include coordinating the middle grades education undergraduate and graduate programs. Among her professional affiliations is membership in the American Educational Research Association, Past President of the Middle Level Education Research Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association, National Association of Professors of Middle Level Education, National Middle School Association, North Carolina Middle School Association, and former Vice President for Membership in the Cape Fear Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. Kathy has published in a variety of journals, including, ClearingHouse, The Middle School Journal, NASSP Bulletin, National Forum Of Teacher Education Journal, and, Education and Urban Society. She is co-author of The Developmentally Responsive Middle Level Principal and has authored entries in five encyclopedias. Additionally, Kathy has presented at more than 35 international, national, and regional conferences.

Kate Tayloe

Kate Tayloe graduated from UNCW in 2001 with a B.A. in Middle Grades Education, with concentrations in Language Arts and Math. She has spent the past seven years teaching Language Arts to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Myrtle Grove Middle School in New Hanover County. In 2006, she received her National Board Certification in Early Adolescent English/Language Arts. She earned a M. Ed. in Language and Literacy from UNCW in 2007. Kate has been teaching a content area reading course, Reading in the Secondary School, at UNCW for the past three years. She has also been providing professional development for her colleagues in New Hanover County as well as across the state since 2002 in the areas of content area literacy and technology integration. Kate has a passion for working with both middle school students and teachers.

Heather Ertzberger graduated from NC State in 1997 with a B.S. in Mathematics and Secondary Mathematics Eduation. She has taught high school and middle school math for in both Pender and New Hanover county as well as working with the Pender County Central Office Staff as a staff development coordinator and trainer. She received her National Board Certification in Early Adolescent Mathematics in 2003. Heather participated in the North Carolina Middle Math grant program and has prepared and offered staff development for middle school math teachers in New Hanover, Pender, and other counties around the state in mathematics content and teaching strategies. She has worked with the Department of Public Instruction on curriculum revisions as well as staff development and test item writing. Heather enjoys working with middle school students and helping teachers discover new ways to challenge and lead their students to deeper understanding and application of the mathematics that they are learning.

Tom Miller, M. Ed. will serve as  the Middle Grades Educators Empowering Learners Instructional Leader at the Watson School of Education.  He manages the day-to-day activities of the grant and works closely with project directors, instructional staff and other stakeholders to assist participants in the implementation of their school plans.  He is an experienced teacher with a background in special education and supervision of beginning teachers.

Jennifer Civelli received her Masters degree from San Diego State University and her bachelor’s degree from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo.  She currently teaches general chemistry courses at Cape Fear Community College and UNCW.  Included in her general chemistry courses, she teaches a distance-learning version at both colleges.  This distance learning General Chemistry incorporates a laboratory portion that is done at home in their kitchen; Kitchen Chemistry.  Jennifer is the Secretary of the Eastern North Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society

Beth Metcalf graduated from the Watson School of Education with both a BA in elementary education and a masters in curriculum and instruction.    She is a National Board Certified Teacher in the area of middle childhood. She has served as the Teacher-in-Residence for the Watson School of Education for three years. At Watson, she is the coordinator of the First Years of Teaching Support Program that focuses on teacher retention and support across the eleven county Watson School University-School Partnership.  She also coordinates and leads the National Board Support Program that serves candidates across North Carolina that are pursuing certification.  Along with these roles she works closely with public school partners to provide support for several other initiatives and grants, such as serving on the NC Quest instructional team. She has authored a handbook of literacy strategies across the middle school content areas, a writing curriculum guide for 3rd -5th grades and numerous professional development pieces including a board game based workshop titled Will it Phase You? that is used a professional development tool in the areas of teacher induction and retention.

Jeff Ertzberger is a Technology Liaison for the Watson School of Education. He holds a master's degree from Pepperdine University in Educational Technology and is currently working on a doctoral degree in Educational Technology. Jeff provides training and support to all members of the PDS partnership. It is Jeff's hope that we can equip intern teachers and inservice teachers with the knowledge and support they will need to use technology effectively in their classrooms.

Beth Allred is a nine year veteran mathematics teacher who earned her national board certification. She joins the Watson School as one of our two Emerging Technology Liaisons, working on faculty development, teaching in the undergraduate programs and serving our outreach efforts. Beth is a UNCW graduate in mathematics and received her MS in the MIT program.
