The inaugural cohort in the NC Quest grant at UNCW concluded its work
with an exciting “Celebration Day” on June 8, 2004 at UNCW.
The focus of the day was participant presentations of the final course
portfolios. These presentations gave students the opportunity to share
what they have learned through their involvement in NC Quest as evidenced
in the learning artifacts they selected for their portfolios.
NC Quest Instructional Leader Marc Zolar kicked off the day with a look
back at “A Year of Learning”.
This presentation highlighted the variety of activities that
cohort 1 participated in with the instructional staff
as a community of learning.
Next, NC Quest Mentor Instructor Diane Calhoun led the group through
a Post-Assessment exercise on the “Key
Capacities for Increasing Quality Instructional Effectiveness.” These key capacities serve
as the anchoring mental construct for the course activities, and the
exercise provides an additional perspective on the growth students achieve
in these areas.
Afterwards, the participants took to the stage to present their final
course portfolios to an audience of peers, instructors and guests. The
students utilized multimedia including Web pages, videos, computer software
and print resources. A wide variety of impressive artifacts was presented
including online lesson plans, Web-based tutorials and exercises, and
actual samples of exemplary student work done in the classroom. After
each presentation, the audience had an opportunity to pose follow-up
questions to clarify key points.
All involved felt the Cohort 1 Celebration Day was a great success and
that it validated the hard work of the students and staff over the academic
year.
NC Quest Cohort 2 will begin with the August Summer Institute at UNCW.
