New Background Check Requirement for Education Students:
All students completing degree or non-degree programs leading to NC teacher licensure must complete a formal criminal background check as they enter education coursework and again as they begin the student-teaching internship semester. In addition, any UNCW student completing education coursework requiring field experience in a public school setting must complete the background check.
Our office has arranged for Certiphi, Inc. to complete a local, state and federal background check. Failure to complete the background check will prohibit you from taking any education coursework in which field experience is required. As the majority of education courses require fieldwork, completion of the check is critical and we will only accept the background checks run by Certiphi, Inc.
All completed background checks will be automatically transmitted to my office. There will be no need for you to print or submit a hard copy. The background checks will be reviewed thoroughly and if any offenses appear which might jeopardize your eligibility for a NC teaching license, we will contact you for a meeting to discuss the concerns.
Failure to complete the background check prior to the start of the academic semester will result in you being dropped from all education courses requiring fieldwork.
Likewise, if there is any change in the background check status during any portion of your program, it is your responsibility to immediately notify Dr. Carol McNulty (mcnultycp@uncw.edu). Failure to disclose this change in status can result in dismissal from the Watson School of Education.
Our office will send out additional information along with instructions on how to complete the background check. The information will be sent to your UNCW email account after pre-registration ends. When you receive our email notification, please complete the background immediately.
