Participant Benefits

  • Recipients will receive up to $10,000 for each year that the award is granted. Undergraduates may renew their award for up to two years, or up to $20,000 total; graduate students and licensure only candidates are eligible for one year, or up to $10,000 total.
  • There are few limitations regarding how the these funds may be spent
  • High quality preparation coursework designed to provide the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to effectively educate all students
  • Individualized plan of study with ongoing advising and assistance
  • University/school system collaboration to ensure placement in teaching positions in high need schools
  • Specific support programs such as individualized mentoring by school system and university personnel
  • High quality professional development programs, accessible 24/7 via web-based technology, based on individual needs and interests

Participant Commitments

  • 3-6 Year commitment to UNCW STAR Grant and Noyce Scholarship Program

  • For each year of full scholarship granted, participants must teach for 2 years in a high-needs districts or schools.
    STAR Scholarship Program recipients must commit to teach for two years in a high need school. "High need" is defined as a school district with at least one school with (1) a high percentage of individuals from families with incomes below the poverty line, or (2) a high percentage of secondary school teachers not teaching in the content area in which the teachers were trained to teach, or (3) a high teacher turnover rate. The teaching service does not need to be performed in North Carolina. If you decide to teach outside of North Carolina, you may be required to submit information to verify that this service is performed in a high-need school or district that meets at least one of the criteria listed above.
    • Undergraduates must complete within 8 years of program completion/certification
    • Graduates/Certificate only must complete within 4 years of program completion/certification
  • Annual updates on employment

  • Minimum attendance of 3 Professional Development presentations provided by UNCW STAR Grant after certification or coursework completion

  • Must meet academic program requirements
