Program Selection Process
Students interested in the STAR grant and who meet the minimum requirements below are encouraged to submit an application.
The following admissions requirements must be met:
Undergraduates
- Completion of university requirements in English,
mathematics and a natural science laboratory
course with a grade of “C” or better in each course
- Completion of the introductory teacher education
course with a grade of “C” or better
- Completion of a minimum of 45 semester hours
with a cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or
better (on a 4.0 scale) on UNCW coursework.
Transfer students must have a minimum of 12
hours completed at UNCW
- Passing scores on teacher education entry tests specified and mandated by the NC Board of Education
Graduates And Career Changers
- Hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an
accredited institution with a major appropriate to
the proposed area of teacher licensure
- Have an undergraduate grade point average of
at least a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in their major, or a
2.7 (on a 4.0 scale) cumulative GPA, or if neither
of the foregoing, participate in a “Fresh Start”
contract to earn a GPA of 3.0 on the first 12 hours
of UNCW coursework
- Earn passing scores on Praxis I (Reading, Writing,
Math)
- Evidence of a commitment to students, their families,
their communities and the education profession
- Evidence of successful work experience
- Demonstrate effective written and oral
communication skills
- Have no criminal record
