The University of North Carolina Wilmington's goal is to create, maintain and enhance a safe and healthy environment for all individuals associated with the institution.
The training programs were established to ensure compliance with all applicable environmental health and safety regulations and to minimize injuries, and therefore, risks. The individual departments are responsible for defining which positions within their departments require training and to ensure that the employees attend the specified training and observe established procedures.

Aerial Lift Training (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.67 and 1910.68)
This training is designed to help employees understand the main hazards of aerial lifts, general safety principles for all kinds of aerial lifts and special rules for using the aerial lifts. Training will include scissor lifts, lift trucks, towable lifts, main lifts and other aerial lifts that shall only be used by trained authorized operators. Training includes classroom time and a practiced skills evaluation.

Asbestos Awareness: (OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101)
This workshop presents basic information about the current state of knowledge concerning the dangers of asbestos fibers in buildings, the methods available to control hazards, and the actions one must take and avoid when working in an area known or presumed to contain asbestos. It is designed for employees who will not directly handle asbestos material, but who may encounter it in the routine course of their work, such as in Buildings and Grounds employees. Initial and refresher training is mandatory.

Back Injury Prevention:
Back injuries and slips, trips and falls cost UNCW more than any other type of accident. This training consists of two American Red Cross courses that cover the following. Back injury prevention covers the causes of back pain and learn how posture, stretching and safe lifting skills can reduce the risk of injury.

Bloodborne Pathogens - Preventing Disease Transmission:
(OSHA 29 CFR 1910.130)
This certified training is designed to inform and protect workers at risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C virus. Cases of occupational transmission are low and preventable. To maintain qualifications, annual re-training is required.

Confined Space: (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146)
Entry into certain types of confined spaces, such as manholes, trenches and pipe chases, may pose significant risk to workers. An inventory of such spaces has been created and employees who may need to enter these spaces should be trained in the practices and personal protective equipment required. Training must be provided prior to entry into a confined space and repeated whenever there are changes in the hazards. Employees should also be aware that hired contractors who work in confined spaces be made aware of associated hazards.

CPR / AED / First Aid
Adult CPR; Automated External Defibrillator; and First Aid training are offered on a regular basis and on special requests. It is conducted as two sessions in one day and upon successful completion, participants are certified for Adult CPR/AED for two years and First Aid for two years through the American Red Cross.

Industrial Low-Lift Trucks/Forklift: (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178)
This training is designed to help employees understand the main hazards of industrial trucks, general safety principles for all kinds of hand trucks and special rules for using two-wheeled hand trucks, four-wheeled hand trucks, pallet movers and powered hand trucks. Powered industrial trucks to include forklifts, platform lift trucks and other specialized industrial trucks powered by internal combustion engines may only be used by trained authorized operators. Training includes classroom time and a practiced skills evaluation. Three year certification issued.

Formaldehyde: (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1048)

Hazard Communication (HazCom) (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200)
Provides employees with effective information and training on hazardous chemicals in their work area at the time of initial assignment and whenever a new physical or health hazard, the employees have not been previously trained on, is introduced into their work area. Training will enable employees to obtain the necessary information off of a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

Hearing Conservation:
OSHA required training for workers that are required to wear hearing protection as part of their job. Includes health effects of exposure to high sound levels and protection strategies. 1 hour, no charge, but required annual audiometric testing.

Lab Safety (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1450)
Covers policies and practical information for all employees and students engaged in the laboratory use of hazardous materials including Radiation Awareness. Training topics include descriptions of chemical and other hazards in the workplace, basic toxicology, exposure prevention and detection and laboratory waste disposal. Required training is provided to faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and laboratory technicians. Taught in conjunction with the Formaldehyde class. Students are encouraged to attend.

Laboratory Workers Radiation Safety:
NC Radiation Protection Agency required training for faculty and/or staff who utilizes radioactive materials, radiation or X-rays in their work. The 4-hour course covers basic awareness through "occupational radiation worker" levels. Course content includes signage, radiation basics, health physics practices, disposal, exposure monitoring, etc. To maintain qualifications bi-annual, re-training required. contact George Accattato if you need to renew. This training requirement may be waived by UNCW Environmental Health & Safety Department based upon presentation of prior experience.

Radiation Safety Awareness(15A NCAC 11)
NC Radiation Protection Agency required training for anyone working in university laboratories where radioactive materials, radiation or X-Rays are being used. The 2 hour course content includes signage, basic health physics principals, radiation rists, exposure limits, etc. This training is required for anyone who will work with radioactive materials or X-ray use areas unless formally waived by UNCW Environmental Health & Safety Department.

OSHA 10-Hour Occupational Safety & Health Course - General Industry
The 10-Hour course was designed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as an overview to health and safety topics in the workplace. This course includes core classes on general safety and electives that are chosen to address hazards specific to the participants' work areas. Upon completion, participants earn a certification card issued by the North Carolina Department of Labor. The course is usually taught in 2-hour blocks over a period of 5 weeks.

Respiratory Protection: (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134)
In certain situations employees may need to wear respiratory protection to perform their jobs safely. No employee may wear an air purifying respirator prior to enrollment in the program. This is the training component of the program, which also includes selection and fit testing of an appropriate respirator and an annual qualifying medical exam. If you have a respirator, bring it to class.

Come learn about an ocean hazard more deadly than sharks! Rip currents claim many lives each year. In this training you will learn what a rip current is, how to identify one, how rip currents are forecasted, and what to do if you find yourself caught in one. This is particularly valuable training for people new to the area who plan on becoming frequent beach goers, or for people who are interested in getting involved with rip current education programs.

Severe Weather Awareness (Storm Spotter)
Become a certified National Weather Service Storm Spotter. The most important resource the National Weather Service has is citizens who can recognize threatening weather and relay the information. This training will teach you how to recognize severe weather such as tornados, thunderstorms, flooding, lightning, hail, and microbursts; know what weather phenomena needs to be reported; and how to relay the information to the National Weather Service. By taking this training you will also enhance UNCW's status as a StormReady university.
