Department Visitation Hours

The Film Studies Department welcomes you to visit us in King Hall at any time to view our office and pick up any of the flyers and brochures we offer in the lobby.

During the summer, we cannot schedule appointments with faculty for prospective student visits, as our faculty do not hold office hours during this time. In fall and spring sessions, we do designate times during which specific faculty members are available to meet with prospective students. We will list these times when they become available; however, please call our office to schedule an appointment, so that faculty can plan accordingly.

Before requesting a faculty appointment, we ask that you carefully review our website and Frequently Asked Questions (below) to familiarize yourself with our department and its offerings. If you have remaining, specific questions and wish to speak to a faculty member, feel free to call us at (910) 962-7502. As always, our office staff is also available to answer specific questions.

What can I do with a degree in Film Studies? Some graduates choose to go to graduate school for various emphases in film studies or production. Those who choose to work in the film industry may find themselves in any number of occupations, many of which are based on experience gained and connections made as undergraduates. Thus, student involvement is very important and encouraged in Film Studies. You can read more about student involvement in the "Opportunities for Majors", "Weekly News" and "Student Profiles" sections of our website. We also encourage you to visit our "Careers in Film" section, which provides a number of resources.

Do you have any examples of what Film Studies alumni are doing? Our most recent department newsletter, forthcoming in Fall 2007, includes a special Alumni News insert with up-to-date information about many of our alumni and their current endeavors and accomplishments..

What kind of computers/software does Film Studies recommend? The Film Studies Department uses Apple computers and software for digital editing. The department has an Apple computer editing lab accessible 24/7 to students for editing assigned projects.

For students who wish to have their own edit system, Apple recommends either a Macbook Pro or an iMac computer with a minimum of 1 GB memory to run the Final Cut Studio editing software. An external firewire drive will also be needed. This will enable students to easily transfer projects between their system and the edit lab/classroom. The lower end 13” MacBook is not recommended for video editing due to its small video processing card.

The Final Cut Suite is very sophisticated and expensive software and probably will not be needed until the student’s junior or senior year, though it is not required by the department that they purchase this software. 46GB of space is required to install the complete software suite. iMovie is used for editing in lower-level classes and is included with the purchase of every Apple computer. The department does not recommend Final Cut Express.

Students should also purchase Microsoft Office for the Mac. The Microsoft Office suite includes Microsoft Entourage, an email program that works seamlessly with the UNCW email exchange server. Indeed, although the campus is PC-based, the Macintosh system works well with all campus systems, and we have encountered no serious compatability problems. Microsoft Office also includes MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

The minimum edit systems are listed on the UNCW website at apple.com. Final cut could be added at a later date.

We currently use Final Cut Pro version 5.0 and will not be upgrading to version 6.0 until our new editing lab opens in Spring of 2008.

Please keep in mind that students do not have to have an expensive computer for editing becuase of our editing lab, which is outfitted with everything students need. Freshmen won't need FCP Studio for approximately 2 years, for advance production projects (at which time there surely will be a newer version). Also, students may discover that they wish to focus more on the study of film, rather than the production or the editing aspect of film study.
