The SOAR Program

To be considered for the SOAR program, students must be admitted to UNCW as a full-time student.

Program Requirements (annually)

  • Admission to UNC Wilmington as a full-time student
  • A combined family income of less than 200% of the federal poverty level
  • 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Completion of a current FAFSA
  • Submission of required information, such as federal tax returns

SOAR components include:

Success

  • Academic achievement
  • Peer group activities
  • Class availability

Opportunities

  • Networking with faculty and senior administrators
  • Mentoring

Aid

  • Graduate with minimal student loan debt
  • Receive increased scholarship awards during with increased academic achievement during the sophomore, junior and senior academic years
  • Receive a federal work-study award for four years(Note: If a student declines a work-study award, these funds are converted to a Stafford Loan.)
  • Have NO parent loans

Responsibilities

  • Participation in community service projects
  • Successful progress towards degree completion
  • Full-time status sufficient to graduate in four years
  • Timely responses to communications from university personnel
  • Active participation in bi-monthly meetings
