The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) seeks applications for the position of Director of the School of Nursing (SON). The SON is dedicated to excellence in teaching, scholarship and service to support the development of health care professionals through in-depth education, professional partnerships, regional engagement and community outreach. UNCW is constructing a state-of-the-art instruction, training and research facility for the SON. Scheduled to open in fall 2010, the building will be equipped to revolutionize nursing education in North Carolina and position UNCW to continue its extraordinary efforts to address the chronic nursing shortage in the state and across the nation.
The Director serves as the chief executive officer of the SON, and provides leadership and support in the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of its academic programs and operations. The Director is the official spokesperson and representative of the SON and reports to the Dean of the College of Health and Human Services. The Director maintains authority and responsibility for the personnel and operational budget; programmatic grants and contracts; special educational and community partnership funds; trust funds and the donor-endowed Faculty Scholarship and other dedicated funds/allocations. The successful candidate will possess a broad and comprehensive knowledge of curriculum development including the establishment of coherent and quality academic programs, instructional methods and practices, interdisciplinary programs, degree establishment processes and experience with academic program funding formulas. The candidate will demonstrate the ability to work effectively and collegially with all members of the campus community and possess excellent communication skills, sound judgment, and decisive leadership skills. Demonstrated success working with senior university officers is also essential.
Minimum qualifications include progressive experience in the following: an administrative role within a school or college of nursing, teaching , and clinical practice as a registered nurse. A current, unrestricted license as a registered nurse in North Carolina by the anticipated start date of July 1, 2009 is required. An earned doctorate in nursing or related discipline with an active record of scholarship, leadership, research, and service; established record of publication of scholarly works; and academic credentials suitable for appointment at the level of full professor at UNCW are required. A master’s degree in nursing is required, if the doctorate is not in nursing. Candidates with at least five years of academic administrative experience are preferred.
