Service Learning

Service Learning integrates meaningful community service with instruction and personal reflection. These credit bearing programs offer students the opportunity to connect with a community, learn from another culture, and give back through their travels.

UNCW partners with several high impact, ethical organizations which enable students to participate in credit bearing service learning programs.

Examples of Service Learning fields include:

  • Animal Care and Rescue
  • Business and Marketing
  • Child and Family Development
  • Community Agriculture
  • Community Enrichment through Arts or Sports
  • Disabilities and Special Needs
  • Education and Literacy
  • Environment and Conservation
  • Health Care
  • Human Rights
  • IT and Computer Science
  • Microfinance and Economic Development
  • Therapy and Rehabilitation
  • Women's Empowerment
  • Youth Development

Service Learning can be a unique way to build resume experience, but students should also think about their interests and areas of expertise before working with a community overseas. We encourage students to read articles about volunteering abroad and speak with our Service Learning Advisor (Lauren Locke, Lockel@uncw.edu) before selecting a program.
