UNCW's Friendship Family Program
UNCW’s Friendship Family Program gives international students the opportunity to engage with American culture in a way they might otherwise not have access to on a traditional college campus. Similarly, Friendship Families get the opportunity to spark lasting friendship with an international student, gaining a unique global perspective.
UNCW’s Office of International Programs assigns students with Friendship Families based on survey responses (including smoking, gender, region preferences) and areas of interest. Friendship Families are a globally-minded, diverse group, comprised of families with small children, single individuals, retired couples, and the like. The interpersonal commitments are flexible and agreed on between the student and the Friendship Family, but typically include a monthly outing or activity.
Friendship Families may apply for assignment with either ESL (English as a Second Language) students, studying in America to quickly improve their English proficiency, or exchange and degree-seeking students (those here for a semester, year, or full degree program) who are taking university-level courses in English. Please note that ESL students may prefer to meet their Friendship Family every 2-3 weeks in order to practice their English.

This is NOT a residential (live-in) program, but rather an opportunity for hosts and students to share their culture and friendship with one another.
