Distinctive Ringing

Sometimes it is useful to know if a call is coming from on campus or off campus. With the UNCW telephone system, the type of ringing tells you where the call is coming from:

  1. One ring repeated every few seconds means an on campus party is calling.
  2. Two short rings repeated every few seconds tells you an off campus party is calling.
  3. Three short rings repeated every few seconds indicates a callback.

Call Waiting Signals

When you are talking on the phone and someone calls you; you will hear a beep in your handset. This is a call waiting signal.

Only you can hear the beep, the person you are talking with will not hear it. The number of beeps tells you whether an inside or outside caller is waiting on your line.

  1. One beep means an on-campus call.
  2. Two beeps means an outside party is waiting on your line.

When you hear a call waiting signal, the person calling you does not hear a busy tone; instead, they will hear a normal ringing tone except that there will be a short beep at the end of each ring. This will tell them that you have heard the call waiting signal and that they should wait for you to answer.

There are two ways you can respond to a call waiting signal.

  1. You can hang up to end your present conversation. Your phone will then ring. When you answer, you will be connected with the waiting caller. You can put your present call on hold and answer the waiting call. To put a call on hold, depress the switchhook and dial *55 and you will be connected to the incoming call.
  2. When you end your conversation and hang up, your phone will ring and you will be connected to the original caller.

Call Transfer

  1. Depress the switchhook and listen for recall dial tone.
  2. Dial the number of the party to whom you wish to transfer call. party answers.
  3. Announce call. You may announce the call to the third party in private. Your first party is still excluded from the call. After announcing the call depress the switchhook again for 3 way call.
  4. Hang up. When you hang up, the other two parties will be connected. Your call is transferred. NOTE: If the third party's line busy or if their telephone is not answered, just depress the switchhook and you will be reconnected immediately.

Call Hold

To Put a Call on Hold:

Your UNCW telephone gives you the ability to place calls on hold without the use of a Hold Button. Of course, if your telephone has a Hold Button, it will work the same; but whether you have a Hold button or not, you can still use the CALL HOLD feature.

  1. Depress the switchhook and listen for recall dial tone. Always get recall dial tone before dialing a code when you have a party on the line.
  2. Dial the call hold code *55; listen for dial tone. Dial tone will disappear after 8 seconds.
  3. Lay the handset down. That's all there is to it. Your call is held. Your first party will be held until you return to the held call.

To Return to a Held Call:

  1. Hang up. Your telephone will ring.
  2. Answer and resume conversation. Your held party is back on the line.
