The cost of attending UNCW is exceptionally modest for both North Carolina and out-of-state students. The Department of Music’s scholarships can make attendance even more affordable. Combined with our outstanding faculty, this makes UNCW one of the most exceptional values in music study on the college scene today.

The application deadline for all scholarships is March 15 for each following academic year.  The music faculty awards scholarships to students who plan to be full-time students during both semesters in the academic year of the award.  In addition, scholarships are made in two payments, one in the fall and one in the spring.  All scholarships and awards are renewable annually.

Online Scholarship Application

William F. Adcock, Jr. Scholarship is awarded to a student who plans to graduate from the music program at UNCW and who does not have more than 36 hours to complete before graduation.  This award is based on:  (a) overall excellence in music, (b) above average academic record, and (c) an acceptable performance standard.  Serious consideration will be given to those students who excel in at least one aspect of music, such as performance, music education, etc.  The amount of the award, approximately $l,500, will be determined by the scholarship committee and will be dependent on the current status of the Adcock Fund.

Department of Music Scholarships are awarded annually to music majors.  At least one of the scholarships will be awarded to a freshman planning to major in music.  Should no freshman qualify, the award will go to an upperclassman music major.  These awards are based on: (a) overall excellence in music, (b) above average academic record, and (c) an acceptable performance standard.  The amount of the awards will be determined by the scholarship committee and will be dependent on the current status of the scholarship fund.

The Cape Fear Jazz Appreciation Society Scholarships in Music are annual awards established by The Cape Fear Jazz Appreciation Society in support of students who are interested in majoring in music within the jazz program.  The scholarships are based primarily on study of jazz instrumental performance and/or composition.  Academic merit is the secondary consideration and is defined as 3.0 GPA, first consideration, with 2.5 GPA as a second consideration. The student should be pursuing a degree in music and actively involved within the jazz program, including the jazz ensembles.  The scholarships are available to incoming freshman as well as continuing students. The award is renewable based on the committee’s recommendation.  If no appropriate applicant is available the amount may be held until an appropriate recipient may apply.

Jazz Awards are available to students who participate in the UNCW Big Band and who are actively involved in the Jazz Program at UNCW.

The Levent Miguel Chen Scholarship in Music is an annual $500 scholarship awarded to a full-time music major with a concentration of applied study in viola.  The recipient must have a minimum 2.5 GPA.  A student interested in composing and/or involved with the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra is desirable.  The scholarship will be awarded half in the fall and half in the spring, and may be renewable based on satisfactory performance of the candidate.

The Johanna Howerton Rehder Scholarship in Voice is an annual $500 scholarship awarded to a full-time music major with a concentration of applied study in voice.  The recipient must have a minimum 2.5 GPA.  The scholarship will be awarded half in the fall and half in the spring, and may be renewable based on satisfactory performance of the candidate.

The Christopher Kent Beaver Memorial Choral Music Scholarship was created by Mrs. Polly Beaver in memory of her husband, Christopher Kent Beaver, who was a gifted and outstanding singer, choral director and church musician. His love for music translated into a love for his musical colleagues and for those who came to hear that music. He will be remembered not only for adding to the richness of the sound of the choir but also adding to the richness of the experience for fellow choir members, both musically and personally. The award may be offered to any full-time UNCW student in good standing, regardless of academic major, who is registered for the UNCW Concert Choir or UNCW Chamber Singers.

The Richard R. Deas Student Concerto Competition

Eligibility
UNCW students currently enrolled as majors or minors in the Department of Music. They must be studying with a UNCW applied music instructor both during the semester of the audition and the semester of the performance. No student may be permitted to perform on the same instrument during his/her matriculation at UNCW.

Rules
Audition pieces must be performed from memory. The contestant must provide two copies of the music for the judges and an accompanist. The decision of the judges is final, and the winner must perform the composition played at the audition, accompanied by the Wilmington Symphony.

Repertoire
Selections must be no more than 12 minutes in length; a suggested list is available from the Symphony or your applied teacher. For works not listed, the suitability and availability of performance materials must be approved by the conductor prior to the acceptance of the application. No composition may be entered if it appeared or will appear on any Wilmington Symphony concert the prior season or the current season.

There is a $15 non-refundable application fee.
