Summer Workshops

Enjoy a week of study and one-on-one interaction with music faculty and guest artists at the University of North Carolina Wilmington summer music workshops. The six workshops are designed to meet the needs of students of varying abilities and experience levels, while covering a comprehensive course of instruction in performance, music theory, ensemble performance, and more.

Daily schedules may include

-small and large ensembles
-faculty + student performances
-student concert at end of week

Piano and Strings Summer Workshop
Sunday, June 22 - Friday, June 27, 2008

The UNCW Summer Piano and Strings Workshops offer a concentrated experience in which students pursue excellence in individual and ensemble performance with college-level instructors. Piano director Barry Salwen is a noted pianist and teacher. Strings director Steven Errante is the conductor of the Wilmington Symphony and Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Piano Summer Workshop
Rising 6th - 12th grade students

Piano Workshop is a week of piano-centered learning for students who play at the upper elementary level or higher (Bach minuets or above). Participants study solo and ensemble music, take individual lessons, participate in performances and classes, and collaborate with strings workshop students in chamber music.

Strings Summer Workshop
Rising 9th - 12th graders

Students in the Strings Workshop are coached in private and small group lessons; theory and music history classes are part of the curriculum. The workshop features a string orchestra made up of all students. String students will also collaborate with piano workshop students in chamber music.

A joint piano-string student recital on Friday night concludes the week.

Concert Band Summer Workshop
Sunday, July 6 - Friday, July 11, 2008
Rising 9th - 12th graders

The workshop covers the many aspects of performing in a large symphonic band and chamber ensembles of various sizes and provides ample one-on-one sessions with UNCW wind and percussion faculty and guest artists.

New: the 2008 workshop will include All-District preparation.

Jazz Summer Workshop
Sunday, July 13 - Friday, July 18, 2008
Rising 9th - 12th grade students

In its 12th year, the UNCW Summer Jazz Workshop has established itself as the premiere summer workshop for jazz study in North Carolina for high school student musicians. The workshop covers virtually every aspect of jazz study and provides ample opportunities to work one-on-one with jazz faculty and guest artists.

Vocal and Choral Summer Workshop
Sunday, July 20 - Friday, July 25, 2008
Rising 9th - 12th graders

The Summer Vocal/Choral Workshop is a one-week intensive program for the serious young singer, especially those considering a career in music. Students will explore a variety of repertoire including solo, choral, musical theater, and opera in preparation for college and career. Outstanding faculty will lead students in individual voice lessons, coachings and master classes. Additional training offered in theory, diction, acting and movement will provide students with a taste of life as a university music student. A final concert will feature the best work of our talented participants, and is free and open to the public.
