MUSIC 115- Survey of Music Literature

COURSE: SURVEY OF MUSIC LITERATURE - MUS 115-004, 115-005

DESCRIPTION: This course serves as an historical overview of Western music from the Baroque Period to the present. We will explore the elements (melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre, dynamics, form, texture) as they pertain to our listening examples. Jazz and American roots music are also covered.

These are accomplished through lecture, video, and listening to recordings. There is no course prerequisite, and no prior musical training is required.

Be advised that note taking is extremely important in this class. No laptops.

OBJECTIVES: The student will be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the
following in writing:
1. The elements of music and basic terminology
2. The families and instruments of the orchestra
3. A comprehension of the musical eras – Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century to the present, historical contexts, and style characteristics
4. Biographical sketches of the great composers from these eras, highlighting some of their major works
5. Listening examples for all of the above
6. Comprehension of information from class videos

GRADING: Four tests, including the final exam count 25% each of your total
grade.
Full-size scantron sheets need to be purchased and brought to each
test.

The grading scale is a 10-point scale: 92-100=A; 90-91=A-; 88-89=B+; 82-88=B; 80-81=B-; 78-79=C+; 72-78=C; 70-71=C-; 68-69=D+; 62-68=D; 60-61=D-; 0-59=F.

ATTENDANCE: Attendance is not mandatory. However, you miss class your own risk. Do borrow a classmate’s notes if you have to be absent. Sorry, I cannot catch you up via e-mail. However, please let me know if there is something you did not understand. Promptness to class is expected.
Latecomers please take the closest seat to the door.

POLICIES: Making up an exam requires prior notice - instructor discretion only.
Cell phones and pagers must be turned off during class.
Please refrain from conversation during lectures, listening segments, and
videos. No food or drink allowed.
Note: Laptops are not to be used in this class.

Note: There are 10 points of extra credit listening on tests 2 & 4.
