Fall 2008

TIME/PLACE: CA1020 (962-7373 winds studio); lesson time TBA
Seminar – TBA

INSTRUCTOR: Mr. Mike Waddell (612.4755 cell)
e-mail: twaddell@ec.rr.com
Office hours 11-12 TR or by appointment.

DESCRIPTION: The student receives:
A) hour lesson (2 credit hrs.) - two hours of practice daily
B) half-hour lesson (1 credit hr.) - one hour of practice daily

The seminar (lab) meets weekly and consists of ensemble playing, listening to recordings, and a discussion of a range of clarinet related
topics. The final lab of each month is the music department seminar.

MATERIALS: 1. The student must have his/her clarinet in good playing condition (instructor’s assessment). This includes a good reed with back-ups.
2. The student must be willing and timely in ordering the necessary music.
3. A metronome.

OBJECTIVES: 1. The student should make progress on the clarinet both technically and musically throughout the semester.
2. The instructor will devise a basic plan for the semester, usually the first two lessons. This includes literature covered and possible performance opportunities, but is subject to change depending on what is working or not working.
3. Most lessons will include (with the use of a metronome):
a) long tones (tone production)
b) technical work (scales/arpeggios, etc.)
c) etude(s) (for technique & phrasing)
d) a working piece (for student recital and/or jury)

GRADING: Each individual lesson will be graded (letter system w/ + & -) and tallied into the final grade along with the jury grade (25%).

The grading is determined by the student’s preparedness for each lesson, with the understanding that a positive attitude and cooperative spirit is
essential for a productive learning environment.

The seminar is factored into the final grade and is based on preparation and participation.

ATTENDANCE: The student must attend a minimum of 10 UNCW concerts/recitals
during the semester. These programs should be brought to the jury.

Attendance is mandatory with no allowed cuts.
An unexcused absence results in a lowering of the final grade by one letter. Four unexcused absences results in a failure of the course.

An excused absence requires prior approval by the instructor. An emergency situation will receive consideration by the instructor. Documentation in such a circumstance is always helpful.
