MUSIC 244/245- Woodwind Methods

COURSE: WOODWIND METHODS – MUS 245-001; 244-001 (½ semester)

TIME/PLACE: Fall 2008; 11:00-11:50; MWF; CA1088

Office hours 11-12 TR or by appointment (CA1020; 962-7373).

MATERIALS: Two major woodwinds will be assigned to each student (one at a
time, each for a half-semester). Each student is responsible for the instrument
he/she has checked out.

Reeds are not provided and need to be purchased by each student.
A notebook should be brought to each class.

DESCRIPTION: We will examine and study the instrumental techniques applied to school band instruction. Lesson plans are assigned.

Each student will practice, be coached (you will also coach each other), and perform examinations on the various woodwinds.

GRADING: Full-semester students: Five lesson plans (written, one presented in class), two performance exams, a written mid-term and final exam.

Half-semester students: Two lesson plans (written, with one presented in class), one performance exam, and a written mid-term exam.
Two lesson plans (20% each)-one presentation 40%

ATTENDANCE: Two absences per half-semester will be allowed without penalty.
Three points will be deducted from the final grade for each additional absence.

An absence is excused by instructor discretion only.
Promptness to class is required and expected. Cell phones turned off.

Making up an exam requires prior notice and is granted by instructor
discretion only.

22 (Mon) Lesson Plan II due & presented in class (remember: instructor needs a copy)

October 1 (Wed) Playing Test #1;
6 (Mon) Fall break - no class
8 (Wed) Music 244 students move to Brass Methods
9 (Thur) Last day for W
22 (Mon) Lesson Plan III due (turn-in only)
November 5 (Wed) Lesson Plan IV due and presented
24 (Mon) Playing Test #2
26/28 (WF) Thanksgiving break

December 3 (Wed) last class day – Written Exam


Criteria for play tests:

Each playing test is done privately. The student order is changed from test to test.

Note: A steady tempo, good tone, control, and musicality are more important than speed.

A) Three major scales - any keys
1. At least one must be two octaves.
2. Be prepared to both slur and single-tongue each scale.

B) Two octave chromatic scale - any starting pitch; slurred

C) Three tunes from method book. The instructor will choose two at the exam.
