Scholarships & Awards

Several scholarships are awarded each year to majors in Philosophy and Religion. The scholarships to be awarded for 2008-2009 are:

  • James J. Megivern Scholarship. is awarded on the basis of academic achievement to one or more departmental majors for use in defraying academic expenses. (The award amount for 2008-09 will be $400; the 2007-2008 award was $400.)
  • Carol L. Thysell Scholarship. is a merit-based scholarship and the recipient will be selected on demonstrated academic ability. (The award amount for 2008-09 will be $500; the 2007-2008 award was $400.)
  • Sankey L. Blanton Scholarship. is awarded to a non-traditional student in the department based on financial need, academic merit, leadership, and character.  (The award amount for 2008-09 will be $1,000; the 2007-2008 award was $800.)
  • Bookstore Awards (2). Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to two departmental majors to provide funds for text book purchases.  $125 each for 2008-2009. 

  NOTE: Preference will be given to students whose primary major is Philosophy and Religion.

You can download a Microsoft Word version of this application that you can print out, fill in, and submit together with a degree audit or transcript.  Applications for 2008-2009 scholarships are due April 15, 2008 and should be submitted to Dr. Habibi. 

NOTE: The Dr. Sankey L. Blanton scholarship is based on need.  Therefore, in order to be considered for this scholarship, you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  For more details contact the Financial Aid and Veterans Services Office in James Hall. Telephone: 962-3177.
