A grade of "C-" or better is required in each physics course counted toward the major.
Requirements for Teacher Certification in Physics: In addition to completing the requirements for a degree in physics and the other requirements of the Teacher Education Program, the following courses are also required for certification: BIO 110; GLY 120.

Note: Students interested in the B.S. degree in Physics are advised to take the PHY 201-202 sequence in the freshman year.

Bachelor of the Arts in Physics

  • PHY 201-202 (8 hrs) Introductory physics with calculus

  • PHY 335 (4 hrs) Intro to Modern Physics
  • plus six hours of physics at 300-400 level
  • All UNCW basic studies requirements


A grade of "C-" or better is required in each physics course counted toward the major.

Physics majors working toward certification for secondary school teaching must also complete Teacher Education Program requirements. Teacher certification requirements are established at the state level and may be changed by the state at any time.


Minor in Physics

  • PHY 201-202 (8 hrs) Introductory physics with calculus
  • PHY 335 (4 hrs) Modern Physics
  • plus six additional hours of physics not to include PHY 101, 102, 105; at least three of these additional hours must be at the 300-400 level.


A grade of "C-" or better is required in each physics course counted toward the minor.

BS in Physics/ECE 3+2

  • Additional courses prescribed by the Electrical Engineering Program at NCSU.  Of these, the following are taught on-site as UNCW distance education classes:  ECE 109, ECE 200, ECE 209, ECE 212, and E 115.

A grade of "C-" or better is required in each physics course counted toward the major. In addition, students must complete the UNCW phase of study with an overall GPA of at least 2.90 and have at least a 2.50 GPA in the last two calculus courses (MAT 162 and MAT 261) to meet NCSU's tranfer admission requirements.
