History of the Program

The NC State College of Engineering began their partnership with UNC Wilmington in 1998 by establishing the 2+2 Pre-Engineering Program and began offering classes on UNCW's campus in the fall of 1998. Since the program's inception, 164 students have transferred to NC State University and many others have transferred to UNC Charlotte and North Carolina A&T State University. At least 90% of these students are successfully working towards engineering degrees or have graduated.

NC State established the original 2+2 program in 1980 at UNC Asheville (UNCA). In addition to UNCA and UNCW, another 2+2 program was established in 1998 at Lenoir Community College in Kinston to serve the eastern North Carolina region. The Havelock campus of Craven Community College now serves as the home of the 2+2 program in eastern North Carolina. The 2+2 programs are intended to bridge the gap in engineering education between the centrally located NC State College of Engineering and the more remote regions of North Carolina.
