Graduate Application Information

APPLICATION DEADLINE IS JANUARY 15, 2009

To be eligible for admission into the M.A. program in Psychology, applicants must have a B.A. or B.S. in psychology or a related field from an accredited college or university in the U.S., or have an equivalent degree from a foreign institution based on a four-year program. If the B.A. or B.S. degree is not in psychology, then the Psychology GRE score is required as well. Applicants must also have a strong academic record with an average of "B" or better in at least 21 hours of psychology courses, including courses in psychological statistics and research methods.

Applicants should complete all sections of the online Graduate Admissions Application which can found at the webpage for the Graduate School at UNCW. This application will require the following information:

  1. Official transcripts of all college work.
  2. Official GRE scores; and, if your bachelor's degree is not in psychology, the GRE Psychology subject test.
  3. Three letters of recommendation.
  4. A $60 non-refundable application fee in U.S. dollars.

In addition, while completing the online Graduate Admissions Application, Psychology applicants will need to submit two pieces of supplemental information:

  1. Psychology Research Interest Form.  You can access this form during the online application process. The form will ask you to select a concentration (General, Applied Behavior Analysis-Clinical, or Substance Abuse Treatment-Clinical) and rate your research interests in a variety of areas of psychology.
  2. Statement of Interest.  This 500-800 word statement is completed during the online application process. Your statement should address: a) the areas of psychology in which you are interested; b) your career & educational goals immediately upon completion of the master’s degree; c) your long-term educational & career goals; d) how completion of this degree program will help you reach your career & educational goals; and e) any career-relevant experience you have had (e.g., instructional, research, computer skills, counseling, animal care, etc.).

Please note that students are admitted into the Psychology Graduate Program only in the Fall semester; and admission is highly competitive with approximately 20 students admitted per year.  Applicants should thus demonstrate a strong record of accomplishment at all levels.

Only applications received by January 15 will be considered for admission to the program and for graduate and teaching assistantships.
