Audit Course Registration
Auditing allows a student to enroll and attend a class without receiving academic credit. The course does count in attempted hours, but does not count in earned hours, GPA hours, quality points, or the GPA calculation. As a result, it is not counted toward full-time status, loan deferment, or financial aid eligibility. Each faculty member must approve the applicant for class participation by assessing the participant's ability to perform in their class. Auditors must pay regular tuition and fees for audited classes.
You cannot retake courses you have taken as an Audit/Graded Audit
later for credit or degree applicability.
Students who are not currently enrolled at UNCW and wish to audit a class will need to submit an online AUDIT ONLY (no credit) application within SeaNet. Please be sure you have the instructor's permission to audit each course prior to submitting the application. The application must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar before the end of the add/drop period. An application fee of $75 will be requested prior to submission of the application. That application fee is waived for UNCW graduates (select 'Pay Later' at the conclusion of the application). The Office of the Registrar will register you for the course indicated. Tuition and fees must be paid to the Cashier's Office prior to attending class.
In compliance with state law, the University of North Carolina system now requires students to request a residency classification from the new Residency Determination Service (RDS). RDS is the entity responsible for all new classifications of residency in North Carolina; you will only need to complete this process if you are claiming to be a North Carolina resident. In order to begin the process of audit only, you must complete the RDS process and receive a RCN (Residency Certification Number). Once you receive this number, please add it to your audit application in the appropriate question space. All applications that are submitted and do not contain a RCN will be labeled as out of state residents for tuition purposes. You will be under the same seat limitations as students taking the course for credit. Courses taken as audit cannot be taken later for credit. Additionally, students registering for more than 3 semester hours must be in compliance with North Carolina Immunization Laws. Contact Student Health Services at 910-962-3280 for more information.
Current UNCW Students
Students who are currently enrolled at UNCW and wish to audit a class may complete the online Application for Audit/Graded Audit Course available on SeaNet. Instructions can be found on our Audit/Graded Audit Course Registration page. Once the request has been submitted, it will go directly to the instructor for approval. If approved by the instructor it will be automatically forwarded to the Office of the Registrar for processing. Tuition and fees for the course must be paid to the Cashier's Office prior to attending class.
Current Faculty & Staff
Active faculty and staff may be eligible for an application fee waiver, orientation fee waiver, and/or a tuition waiver. To determine what benefits for which you may qualify, please contact human resources at 2-3160 or visit http://uncw.edu/hr/training-tuition.html.
This option is for students who do not seek academic credit, but need to repeat a course beyond what the repeat rules allow and still have a letter grade appear on their transcript. This option may also be used by students who seek a graded audit for a course for which credit has already been granted through transfer work or special exam.

Once the request has been submitted, it will go directly to the instructor for approval; if approved, it will be sent to the course's academic dean. If approved by both, it will be automatically forwarded to the Office of the Registrar for processing. Tuition and fees for the course must be paid to the Cashier's Office prior to attending class.
The credits for classes being audited for grade do not count toward full-time status, loan deferment, or financial aid eligibility. Although the final grade will appear on your transcript, the grade will not be included in your grade point average and the credits will not be included in your credit total.
Main Campus vs. Extension Tuition and Fees
A full-time regular-term student is an undergraduate student that is enrolled in 12 or more credit hours of on-campus courses or a graduate student enrolled in 9 or more credit hours of on-campus courses. These students will be billed according to the Campus Rates for tuition and fees for all courses (including extension courses) and not billed at the Extension/Distance Education Rates.
Students enrolled in a combination of campus and extension courses (not meeting the definition of full-time regular-term student) will be billed at campus rates for main campus courses and billed at the extension rates for distance education courses (section 800).
Note: Full-time enrollment status may be determined differently for purposes other than tuition billing; i.e. financial aid.
