Recent and Upcoming Faculty Achievements

Dr. Virginia Adams has been reappointed by Senator Basnight to the North Carolina Nurse Scholars Commission for another four year term. This new term of service will expire on June 30, 2009. "My dream is to help get more resources in scholarships for nursing sudents and some funding for nurse educators," comments Dean Adams. The Nurse Scholars Program is a competitive, merit-based scholarship/loan program available to students who have chosen to enter the nursing profession. An 11-member Nurse Scholars Commission selects recipients for the award on the basis of superior academics, leadership potential, and desire to practice nursing on a full-time basis in North Carolina. Dr. Virginia Adams, joins the 12th class of Leadership North Carolina along with 50 leading citizens from across the state. Leadership North Carolina selects citizens who are current or emerging leaders in their organizations and/or communities. To find out more about Leadership North Carolina, visit their Web site.

Dr. Perri Bomar was funded $108,653 from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation for "Bolton Health and Wellness Center: A Community-Campus Partnership to Reduce Health Care Disparities in Rural Eastern Columbus County."

Dr. Perri Bomar received $32,624 from AHEC to fund the project “Improving Cancer Outcomes for African Americans.”

Ms. Caroline Cropp was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, National Leadership Honor Society, in May 2004.

A previously published manuscript by Jeanne Kemppainen, “HAART Adherence in Culturally Diverse Patients with HIV/AIDS: A Study of Male Patients from a Veteran’s Administration Hospital in North California,” will be included in a book on Medication Adherence in HIV/AIDS, edited by Dr. Jeffrey Laurence, editor of the journal AIDS Patient Care and STDs.

A proposal by Dr. RuthAnne Kuiper, “The Impact of PDA Technology on Clinical Performance Outcomes of Undergraduate Baccalaureate Nursing Students,” was endorsed for support. The committee along with the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology Systems Division reviewed the proposals to determine the technical feasibility, the impact in the classroom and on teaching and learning.
