Calendar - Spring 2009

Sustainability Film Series sponsored by CAIC

UNCW Presents will show three films in celebration of sustainability, defined as balancing the fulfillment of human needs with the protection of the natural environment so that these needs are met not only in the present, but in the indefinite future.

The Price of Sugar will be shown at 7pm in Lumina Theater on Tuesday, February 3

In the Dominican Republic, a tropical island-nation, tourists flock to pristine beaches unaware that a few miles away thousands of dispossessed Haitians have toiled under armed-guard on plantations harvesting sugarcane, much of which ends up in U.S. kitchens. They work grueling hours and frequently lack decent housing, clean water, electricity, education or healthcare. Narrated by Paul Newman, "The Price of Sugar" follows Father Christopher Hartley, a charismatic Spanish priest, as he organizes some of this hemisphere's poorest people to fight for their basic human rights. This film raises key questions about where the products we consume originate and at what human cost they are produced.

Manufactured Landscapes will be shown at 7pm in Lumina Theater on Tuesday, March 17

MANUFACTURED LANDSCAPES is a striking documentary on the world and work of renowned artist Edward Burtynsky. Internationally acclaimed for his large-scale photographs of "manufactured landscapes"-quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines and dams-Burtynsky creates stunningly beautiful art from civilization's materials and debris. The film follows him through China, as he shoots the evidence and effects of that country's massive industrial revolution. With breathtaking sequences, such as the opening tracking shot through an almost endless factory, the filmmakers also extend the narratives of Burtynsky's photographs, allowing us to meditate on our impact on the planet and witness both the epicenters of industrial endeavor and the dumping grounds of its waste.

Planet in Peril will be shown at 7pm in Lumina Theater. Part 1 on Tuesday, April 7 and Part 2 on April 14

In "Planet in Peril," CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, CNN's chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and Animal Planet host and wildlife biologist Jeff Corwin take viewers around the globe for a two-part documentary on the threats to the world's environment.

"Planet in Peril" was filmed in 13 countries, uncovering places where environmental change is not a theory or a future forecast but a crisis happening in real time. Bringing viewers the stories behind the statistics, Cooper, Corwin and Gupta focus on today's environmental threats and their impact on tomorrow. This film only available to the UNCW Community.

All films are free and open to students, faculty/staff, and general public. Discussions to follow.
