General Information Regarding the New Theatre Curriculum (beginning AY 2008-2009)

• The Department of Theatre provides high level education and training in theatre art within the context of a liberal arts environment. For our majors we offer three areas of concentration: performance, production design and technology, and general theatre studies. Students committed to performance or production design and technology are challenged with pre-professional training and a solid academic core that prepares them for a range of outcomes: from entry into the theatre and film markets to exciting careers in related disciplines.  Training, rehearsals, and productions all occur within our brand new, state-of-the-art equipped theatre facility. Students interested in general theatre studies develop individualized or community-based projects within a wider array of theatre courses and experiences. For theatre minors or general university students we offer a range of production opportunities, as well as academic and active learning workshop classes to augment the student’s breadth of knowledge.  Students interested in Dance may select from a variety of studio courses that will enhance their educational experience at UNCW.
  
  
• Each student is required to take a minimum of 43 credit hours in order to earn a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in theatre. A double-major is possible.
  
  
• The required core includes courses in performance, design, production, directing, script analysis, and theatre history. The senior seminar "capstone" course culminates the student's work throughout his or her undergraduate education for the purpose of preparing audition and portfolio materials, and interview techniques. In the General Studies Concentration, students may create and direct a performance project, write a scholarly paper, complete an internship, or develop a project that represents their individualized program of study.
  
  
• Included in the required core are a series of studio courses providing advanced training in the elements of theatre production. These courses generally support the University Theatre productions. Each major participates in at least three diverse production areas.
  
  
• Elective courses in the major are offered for advanced study in all areas of theatre. Students may tailor the selection of these electives to suit individual needs. Additional special topics and directed individual study courses (DIS) are also available.
  
  
• An internship program places junior and senior level students within national and local theatre and opera companies, performing arts centers, and throughout the film production companies associated with Screen Gems studios in Wilmington.
  
  
• Matriculation into the Department of Theatre occurs by student’s declaration and is based upon faculty recommendation, or a student's audition or portfolio review. Transfer students are welcome. When students have completed or have in-progress 26 or more university credits they are eligible for matriculation as a theatre major. See the Department Chair if you have any questions.
  
  
• Computer Competency Requirement: to satisfy the computer competency requirement for the B.A. degree in theatre a student must successfully complete THR 165.
  
  
• Applied Learning Requirement: to satisfy the applied learning requirement for the B.A. degree in theatre a student must successfully complete THR 110.
  
  
• Requirements for a Major in Theatre for a B.A. in Theatre Degree: As part of the 43 credits required for a major in theatre, students in each option must complete a core curriculum consisting of THR 110, 165, 231, 321 and 322. A “C” is required in each core course counted toward the major.
