For more information on these scholarships, contact Dr. Linda Potts at pottsl@uncw.edu. Scholarships and awards are determined at the end of the spring semester for the upcoming academic year. Students must have established a grade point average with UNCW.

Please read each scholarship's specific requirements to see if you qualify before applying.  Only one application is required.  Please list all scholarships you are applying for on one application.

UNCW Alumni Association Scholarships

Applicants must have a minimum of 3.5 grade point average on all high school or college work. Students may be in-state or out-state.

The scholarships cover $1,500 of in-state tuition and fees.

Send an application, a certified transcript, and two complete Recommendation for Award forms to the Alumni Relations Office at the address below.

Undergraduate Research Fellowship Competition

$1000 tuition waiver

Applicants must be a rising junior or senior, and have completed at least one semester at UNCW, and have a proposed research project that would be completed by the end of the school year. Each student must have a faculty sponsor who will serve as an advisor. Course credit for the project may be arranged as a Directed Individual Study or Honors Program. If no credit is obtained the final product of the project should be submitted to the Research Committee Chair.

The Jay Hensley Endowed Scholarship

The Jay Hensley Endowed Scholarship is established for the purpose of recognizing academic merit in the area of Marine Science at UNCW. 

Application forms may be obtained from the biology and marine biology departmental website or the Tri-Beta Bulletin Board in Dobo Hall and returned to the Scholarship Committee, C/O Dr. Linda F. Potts.

Applications are due February 29, 2008. 

The final selection is made on the basis of: academic achievement and achievement in marine science activities beyond the classroom (research, employment, etc.).

The scholarship is to be awarded to a full-time junior or senior majoring in Marine Science.  Applicants graduating from a high school in New Hanover, Pender, Columbus, Brunswick, or Horry Counties will be given preference.

Franklin H. Allen Scholarship

The Franklin H. Allen Scholarship is established for the purpose of recognizing merit in the area of Biology or Clinical Laboratory Sciences at UNCW.

By nomination by faculty member (to Dr. Linda F. Potts) or application forms may be obtained from the biology and marine biology departmental website and the Tri-Beta Bulletin Board in Dobo Hall and returned to the Scholarship Committee, C/O Dr. Linda F. Potts.

Applications are due February 29, 2008.

The scholarship is to be awarded to a rising senior (89-105 hours) majoring in Biology or Clinical Laboratory Sciences at UNCW on the basis of GPA and other evidence of achievement.

Previous Award:  $1500

Charles and Kay Bolles Marine Biology Scholarship

The Charles and Kay Bolles Marine Biology Scholarship is established for the purpose of recognizing merit in the area of Marine Biology at UNCW.

Application forms may be obtained from the biology and marine biology departmental website or the Tri-Beta Bulletin Board in Dobo Hall and returned to the Scholarship Committee, C/O Dr. Linda F. Potts.

Applications are due February 29, 2008.

The final selection is made on the basis of: merit and financial need.

The scholarship is to be awarded to a full-time undergraduate student seeking a Marine Biology major at UNCW.

Previous Award:  $2500

Cape Fear Garden Club

The Cape Fear Garden Club Fund is established for the purpose of recognizing merit in the area of Biological Sciences at UNCW.

Application forms may be obtained from the biology and marine biology departmental website or the Tri-Beta Bulletin Board in Dobo Hall and returned to the Scholarship Committee, C/O Dr. Linda F. Potts.

Applications are due February 29, 2008.

The final selection is made on the basis of: GPA, and a continued interest in Botany.

The fund is to be awarded to a rising junior majoring in Biology with a cumulative GPA of 3.0.  The student must have successfully completed 4 semester hours in Plant Biology  and be willing to contribute to the operations of the Bluethenthal Wildflower Preserve.

Benjamin R. and Edith B. Graham Scholarship

The Benjamin R. & Edith B. Graham Scholarship is established for the purpose of recognizing and encourage academic excellence among UNCW students.

By nomination by faculty member (to Dr. Linda F. Potts) or application forms may be obtained from the biology and marine biology departmental website or the Tri-Beta Bulletin Board in Dobo Hall  and returned to the  Scholarship Committee, C/O Dr. Linda F. Potts.

Applications are due February 29, 2008.

The final selection is made on the basis of: academic achievement and financial need.

The scholarship is to be awarded to an undergraduate student in the Marine Biology program or in the School of Education that has graduated from an accredited high school in Southeastern NC (Bladen, Brunwick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender, Sampson Counties).

The student should demonstrate character and leadership potential.  The scholarship will be valued to meet in-state tuition and fees listed in the UNCW catalog for the year of the award.

Note:  This award is not guaranteed to be awarded this year

The John Colucci Jr. Memorial Scholarship

The John Colucci Jr. Scholarship is established for the purpose of recognizing merit in the area of Marine Biology at UNCW.

The final selection is made on the basis of: merit and financial need.

The scholarship is to be awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student seeking a Marine Biology major at UNCW.

Previous Award:  $3500

The David G. Lindquist Scholarship in Biology

The Lindquist Scholarship is established for the purpose of recognizing merit in the area of Marine Biology or Biology at UNCW.

Application forms may be obtained from the biology and marine biology departmental website or the Tri-Beta Bulletin Board in Dobo Hall and returned to the Scholarship Committee, C/O Dr. Linda F. Potts.

Applications are due February 29, 2008.

The final selection is made on the basis of:  demonstrated academic ability.

The scholarship is to be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student seeking a Marine Biology or Biology major at UNCW.

Previous Award:  $500

The Preyer Family Scholarship

The Preyer Family Scholarship is established for the purpose of recognizing merit in the area of Marine Biology at UNCW.

The scholarship is to be awarded to an undergraduate student seeking a Marine Biology major at UNCW.

Previous Award:  $750

The John & Belle Shishko Scholarship in Life Sciences

The John & Belle Shishko Scholarship in the Life Sciences is established for the purpose of recognizing financial need and merit in the area of Biology or Marine Biology at UNCW.

Application forms may be obtained from the biology and marine biology departmental website or the Tri-Beta Bulletin Board in Dobo Hall and returned to the Scholarship Committee, C/O Dr. Linda F. Potts.

Applications are due February 29, 2008.

The final selection is made on the basis of financial need, merit and demonstrated academic ability.

The scholarship is to be awarded to an undergraduate student (rising junior fall 2008) seeking a Biology or Marine Biology major at UNCW.

The student must be a rising junior beginning fall of 2008 and must have and maintain a 3.0 GP

Award Amount:  In-state tuition, fees, and books.  Scholarship is renewable for a second year but prior recipients must reapply.

The Ellen G. Wilson Scholarship in Marine Biology

The Ellen G. Wilson Scholarship is established for the purpose of recognizing merit and need in the area of Marine Biology at UNCW.

Application forms may be obtained from the biology and marine biology departmental website or the Tri-Beta Bulletin Board in Dobo Hall and returned to the Scholarship Committee, C/O Dr. Linda F. Potts

Applications are due February 29, 2008.

The final selection is made on the basis of: merit and financial need.

Student must have a 3.0 overall GPA.

The scholarship is to be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student seeking a degree in  Marine Biology at UNCW.

Award:  $500
