What are the requirements for getting admitted into NC TEACH?

NC TEACH requires that applicants:

  • Demonstrate at least 3 years of successful work experience

  • Hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant degree area

  • Successfully complete an on-site interview with a panel of educators

  • Have an average grade of B (3.0) in the major area of undergraduate study

  • Have a minimum 2.7 or better cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) for all post-secondary work

  • Pass Praxis I (Reading, Writing, Mathematics) – special undergraduates or
    pass the Miller Analogies Test or Graduate Record Exam – non-degree graduates

  • SAT scores of 1100 can be used in lieu of Praxis I for admission to teacher education effective February, 2006.

    Note: Students with SAT scores of less than 1100, but with SAT scores of 550 or better on Verbal can be exempt from Praxis I Reading and Writing, SAT of 550 or better on Math can be exempt from Praxis I Math.

NC TEACH will accept current lateral entry teachers who have not taught more than one year and who have not had more than 3 hours of education coursework.


What teaching licensure areas can I earn through NC TEACH at the UNCW site?

UNCW’s NC TEACH currently offers preparation for licensure in the following critical teacher shortage areas:

  • Middle Grades (6-9) Mathematics

  • Middle Grades (6-9) Science

  • Secondary Grades (9-12) Mathematics
  • Secondary Grades (9-12) Science

  • K-12 Special Education (General Curriculum Track or Adapted Curriculum Track)
