Spring 2006
Course Description:
EDN 495: The Teacher, Learner & the School
The first of the Alternative Pathway to Teaching Program undergraduate
courses focuses on the basics of effective teaching, instructional
planning, and the use of technology in the classroom. It will include
such topic areas as educational psychology, instructional planning,
introduction to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, learning
styles, relationships, and school governance. The program and course
sessions are delivered by a team of accomplished educators drawn
from Watson School of Education faculty and public school partners.
A blended model for delivery and participation in the class will
include face-to-face sessions at the two sites (Coastal Community
College and UNCW), simultaneous engagement between both sites through
the use of Distance Learning Classrooms, and on-line learning modules.
The format for class sessions will include instructional lectures,
discussions (large and small groups), cooperative learning tasks,
and hands-on technology labs.
As with all courses and programs in the Watson School of Education,
this course is aligned with our Conceptual Framework and is designed
to help students become effective decision-makers and reflective
practitioners.
