Steven Miller, CMS, Andrew Shepard, NURC, and Ellen Prager, CMS, received $175,000 from Emerson Associates International for their project "Coral Reef Science to Meet National Needs: Assessment and Monitoring, Ocean Acidification Impacts and Sustaining an Ocean Observing Platform."
Wade Watanabe & Md. Shah Alam, CMS, were funded $219,350 by NC Sea Grant for "Controlled Breeding, Larviculture and Intensive Growout of High Value Marine Fish Species for US Agriculture." Watanabe also recieved funding from NC State/Sea Grant for "The red porgy(Pagnus pagnus): optimizing prey enrichment and articifical microdiet applications for expanding hatchery production of fingerlings."
Patricia Kelley, Geography and Geology, and co-PI Gregory Dietl, Cornell University, received $119,999 from NSF for "REU Site: Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Biodiversity Conservation." This REU brings together a number of diverse and talented undergraduates to study coastal ecosystems past and present.
Amanda Southwood, Biology and Marine Biology, received $36,964 from NC State/Sea Grant for "Diamondback terrapin distribution and habitat utilization in the lower Cape Fear River."
Michael Durako, Biology and Marine Biology, received $21,000 from NOAA for "Tissue Localization of Flavanoid Compounds in Halophila johnsnii: Depth and Salinity Effects."
Lawrence Cahoon, Lynn Leonard, Martin Posey, Thomas Lankford & Troy Alphin, were funded $21,762 by NC Sea Grant for their project, "Microbial Anti-oxidants from Swine Waste Lagoons."
Thomas Lankford, biology and marine biology, was funded $46,985 by Rutgers University for the project "Recruitment Dynamics of Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix): Coastwide Patterns of Juvenile Recruitment."
Leslie Hossfield & Stephen Demski, received $70,000 from the Golden LEAF, Inc. for "Southeastern North Carolina Food Systems Project." Hossfeld is an assistant professor in sociology & criminal justice and Demski serves as Vice Chancellor for Public Service and Continuing Studies.
Heather Koopman & Andrew Westgate, biology & marine biology, were funded $166,522 by the Office of Naval Research for the project "Nitrogen Gas Dynamics in Adipose Tissues of Diving Mammals: Do Lipid Composition and Low and Mid-Frequency Sound Affect N2 Solubility?" Westgate was also funded $21,000 from the National Geographic Society for "Navigating to the Most Remote Place on Earth: Marine Habitat Use, Migration Patterns and Seasonally Variable Niche Partitioning of Atlantic Shearwaters."
Antje Almeida & Paulo Almeida, chemistry & biochemistry, received $50,000 from the LA Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for "Staphylococcal Adaptions to Platelet Microbicidal Proteins."
Dale Cohen, Psychology, received $121,719 from NIH for "Quantifying Stimulus, Response and Numerical Biases."
Lynn Leonard, CMS, received $1,140,000 from NOAA for the "Integration of Coastal Observations and Assets in the Carolinas in Support of RCOOS Development in SECOORA."
Jennifer Dorton, CMS, received $294,504 from NOAA for the "Southeast Marine Weather Portal."

Virginia Adams, Dean of the School of Nursing, received $400,000 from the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation for "Camp BONES: A University-Community Partnership to Prepare Underserved and Unrepresented Youth for Future Careers in Nursing and the Health Sciences"
Cathy Barlow, Dean of the Watson School of Education, was funded $76,000 by UNC-GA for the project "UNCW Affiliation with the NC Teacher Recruitment Network."
Larry Cahoon, Biology and Marine Biology, recieved $117,000 from the UNC General Administration for "Microbial anti-oxidents from swine waste lagoons."
Lynn Leonard, Center for Marine Science, received $200,000 from the UNC General Administration for "Initiation of an Inter-Institutional Environmental Observation Network System for North Carolina."
Michael Mallin, CMS, received $70,000 from the City of Wilmington for "Stormwater Runoff and Water Quality of Wilmington Watersheds, 2007-08."
Karl Ricanek, Computer Science, received $160,000 from Unisys Corporation for "Age-Related Morphological Changes: Models of the Head and Face."

Craig Tobias, of geography and geology, received a total of $81,100 from RTI International for the project "Camp Lejeune Marsh and Stable Isotope Monitoring."
