Dr. Melinda J. Anderson has been the Director of University College for 2 years and was recently appointed as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies. She is from Woodbridge, Virginia and earned her undergraduate degree in Mass Communications and a B.S. Business Minor from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).  Dr. Anderson also earned an M.S. degree in Adult Education from VCU and her doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the College of William and Mary.

She is passionate about student success.  As a first-generation student, Dr. Anderson understands how difficult it can be to navigate your way through school. Her parents instilled in her the importance of education and living your purpose. She is committed to providing students and their families the support they need to accomplish their academic and career goals. 

Dr. Anderson enjoys spending time with her family and friends.  She also loves to travel, read, and learn about anything and everything.  She loves being an academic advisor because as the late Maya Angelou said People may forget what you did, what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel.  Dr. Anderson really enjoys connecting and building relationships with students.  In fact, she was inspired to enter the profession because of her academic advisor.  Her advisor was helpful, supportive, and genuinely cared for her and wanted to see her accomplish her goals.  Dr. Anderson hopes that all her students leave her feeling the same way.

Jenny Adams has been an advisor in University College for 11 years.  She is a native Wilmingtonian who earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in English from North Carolina State University. 

Jenny is passionate about working with a diverse group of students since starting in higher education - adult learners, transfer students, and freshmen.  She believes that all students should have access to meaningful experiences and that the first year matters to all students. She is also passionate about creating programs that provide support and community for all students.

In her free time, Jenny enjoys reading, camping, seeing live music, going to the beach, and spending time with her family, including her two boys, Miles (7) and Henry (3).

Jenny loves being an academic advisor because she gets to be a part of a student's journey from day one.  She loves supporting students through their highs and lows, helping them discover their passions, and encouraging them as they work towards their goals.

Catherine Lyles M.A.

Catherine has been an advisor in University College for 1 year.  She is from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in European Studies, with a concentration in Russian and German from Belmont University.  Catherine completed a graduate degree in International Relations at Webster University in Vienna, Austria.  She is passionate about improvement on a personal and professional level  - she is drawn to and excited about opportunities to make things better, whether it’s a student-related situation or a business process. 

Being from south Louisiana, she loves good food – cooking, and most importantly, eating new things are two of her favorite weekend activities.  Catherine also loves to travel and explore new places.  In fact, the part of traveling she enjoys most is figuring out whatever the local specialty is (food, art, music, sports, nature, etc.) and experiencing it.  More generally, she enjoys being outside and spending time with family, friends, and her pups.  Finally, Catherine enjoys being an academic advisor because it affords an opportunity to support students as they develop a sense of self and gain confidence as they explore their potential and troubleshoot challenges and set-backs that pop up along the way.

Stultz, Rebecca

Rebecca Stultz has been an advisor in University College for 11 years.  She is from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and earned her undergraduate in Psychology from Purdue University.  Rebecca also earned a Master’s in Education Counseling from Boston University.

She is passionate about learning and finding relationships between seemingly disparate ideas, events, or people that together generate solutions.  In essence, she loves solving puzzles.  In her free time, Rebecca spends time in her garden and always has a book or two in progress.  Furthermore, she enjoys visiting one of her two daughters in San Francisco, or the UK, as well other family and friends spread across the country. 

Rebecca loves being an academic advisor because it is an interactive and creative process with each unique student.  She loves learning about her students interests, values, and strengths and helping them translate these into an academic major, career, and/or personal goal.  The first year of college can be such a pivotal time for students, and Rebecca is honored to have an opportunity to be a significant part of it.

Michelle Vliem has been an academic advisor in University College for 12 years.  She is from a hybrid of the east and west side of Michigan.  She was born on the east side where the bulk of her extended family is and she attended upper grades (Shelby), college and started her professional life (Grand Rapids) on the west side.  Michelle earned a BS in Business Administration with a management focus from Ferris State University.  She also earned an MA in Higher Education Counseling Education from Western Michigan University.

She is passionate about college football and seeing students find their passion!  In her free time, Michelle loves to be outside doing anything from walking on the beach, riding her bike, working in the yard, and hanging with her awesome husband and current rescue cat, "Chunk."  She loves being an advisor because when she attended college she did not have an academic advisor and struggled to find her way.  She enjoys working with students in finding their path and helping them understand, utilize, and connect to all the great campus resources and experiences that are available that will shape who they will become as an individual.

Maggie Bannon has been an academic advisor at UNCW for 11+ years.  She is from Huntington, West Virginia and she earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Psychology from Marshall University.  Before moving to North Carolina, she worked as a Learning Specialist/Academic Advisor with the student-athletes at Marshall University.   

Maggie is passionate about helping students develop their own strengths and goals and showing them how UNCW can help them achieve these goals.  In her free time, Maggie likes to compete in flyball and agility with her two cocker spaniels, Moose and Witten.  She is a member  of the Pawmetto Pack Flyball Club in Florence, SC and the Azalea Dog Training Club in Hampstead, NC.  One of her dogs is a registered therapy dog and together they visit local nursing homes and help students at UNCW destress during finals.  She also likes to spend time with family and friends and cheer on her favorite college and pro football teams!

She loves being an academic advisor because she can help students realize their passions and strengths and use this information to help them determine a career path where they could feel most confident and full of purpose.  Maggie challenges students to be their best selves and get the most out of their undergraduate careers.

Shauna Baker-Karl has been an academic advisor for 3 years.  She is from Chantilly, Virginia and earned her undergraduate degree in English from the University of Virginia.  Shauna also earned a Master’s degree in Higher Education from UVA as well.

She is passionate about forming relationships with student-athletes to give them the best holistic support possible which includes helping them find the same drive for academics that they have for sports.  In her free time, Shauna loves to read, play with her pets, and watch UNCW athletics.  Shauna loves being an academic advisor because of the relationships she has with her students along with the opportunity to mentor incredible young adults.

Melissa Friddle joined University College as an academic advisor 1 year ago.  Prior to becoming an academic advisor, Melissa served in the Office of the Registrar at UNCW for four years.  She earned an undergraduate degree in Music and a minor in business, from Winthrop University.  Melissa also earned a Masters of Business Administration from Appalachian State University.

She is passionate about living life to the fullest.  In fact, Melissa strives to be a lifelong learner with continued personal growth as well as someone who never passes up a great adventure.  In her free time, she likes to kayak, practice yoga, have adventures while travelling, and cheer on the Cubs. Melissa loves being an academic advisor because it allows her the chance to work directly with students in a unique capacity where she can advise them, advocate for them, and cheer them on as they transition into their new majors.  Melissa’s students inspire her to be the best version of herself in every facet of life.

Gina Garera has been an advisor in University College for 6 years.  She is a Long Island, New York native but earned a degree in Music Business and Marketing and Management from Middle Tennessee State University.  She also earned a Master's of Education from Middle Tennessee State University. 

Gina is passionate about her family, friends, food, music, seeing new places, and learning new things.  In her free time, Gina loves spending time with her friends and family including her two doggies, Tonka and Tucker.  She travels as much as possible and also volunteers as an International Officer with her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi.  Finally, Gina loves being an academic advisor because she enjoys getting to know each student, helping them explore their passions and assisting them in navigating their college career.  Gina had an amazing advisor when she was in college, and she hopes to help students the same way her advisor made a difference in her life.

Ginny Guerry has been an academic advisor in University College for 15 years.  She is from Howell, New Jersey and earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Elizabethtown College.  Ginny also earned a Master’s degree in Counseling from Temple University. 

She is passionate about learning something new and/or having a new challenge to dive into. She loves to surround herself with family and friends who have a variety of interests who encourage her to try new things.  Ginny enjoys playing pickleball, traveling, playing the piano, and turtle nest sitting at the beach.

Ginny’s loves being an academic advisor because of her love for people and the opportunity to learn new things and ability to work in a college setting.  She enjoys helping students clarify their priorities as they learn more about themselves and the changing world we live in; Ginny calls it "fun!" Teaching, advising, and watching students learn and grow during their four years at UNCW is powerfully rewarding for her as an advisor, mentor, and friend.

Erika Hanson has been an advisor in University College for 3 and a half years.  She is from Vernon, Connecticut, and she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Radio/TV/Film and Culture.  Erika attended several graduate institutions such as Illinois State University, Central CT State University and UNCW.  She earned a Master’s of Science in Communication and Counseling and anticipates earning an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership in 2020. 

Erika is passionate about learning for her own personal growth as well as empowering students to discover their unique path in life.  She enjoys reading, traveling, catching the latest movie, trying a new restaurant, and spending an evening at the comedy club.  Finally, Erika loves being an academic advisor because she gets the opportunity to meet new students each year, hear their stories, and assist them on their journey of self-discovery.

Karsan Hardy has been an advisor in University College for almost 2 years. She is a North Carolina native, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from UNC-Charlotte in 2013. Prior to joining the UC staff, she provided advising and programming support for the Supplemental Instruction Program at the University of South Carolina. She also has previous advising experience working as an Academic Coach with at-risk students.

Karsan received a Master of Education degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs from the University of South Carolina. She is passionate about serving Transfer and Military students and helping them achieve their academic, career, and personal goals. Karsan enjoys spending time with her husband, friends, and family; cooking; putting together puzzles; and snuggling with her pups, Cola and Fisher.

Kristen Harris has been an advisor in University College for 1 year.  She is from Richfield, North Carolina, and she earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from UNCW and Pfeiffer University.  Kristen earned a Master’s degree in Education, Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education from UNC-Greensboro.

Kristen is passionate about helping others in need, teaching kindness to her children, and enjoying every day to its fullest.  In her free time, she enjoys participating in outdoor activities, playing with her children and dogs, trying out new restaurants, reading a great book, or just relaxing at the beach with her family.  Kristen loves being an academic advisor because she enjoys helping students find their place at UNCW, feel connected, and be successful. She fell in love with UNCW during her first year here as a student and hopes to help other students enjoy their time here just as much.

Amy is passionate about teaching and learning, social justice, and Jerry Garcia!  In her free time, she likes to travel and make useless things out of useless things, and spend time with family.  Amy loves being an academic advisor because she finds it a very meaningful thing to take part in the lives of her students during such a pivotal time in their journey.

Garrett Knudson has been athletic advisor for 2 years.  He is from Alexandria, Virginia and earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise, Sport, and Health Education at Radford University.  Garrett also earned a Master's of Science in Sport Management from West Virginia University. 

He is passionate about being great in all aspects of his life.  Everything he does, he tries to do it with 100% effort whether it is a large or small task.  In his free time, Garrett likes to watch sports, hang out at the beach, workout, and eat food.  Finally, Garrett loves being an academic advisor because it puts him in the position to provide student-athletes with the tools to succeed through college and in life.  He enjoys when his students enter his office just to share a success story they had outside athletics.

She is passionate about helping students achieve their goals and getting into their dream professional program.  During Erin’s free time, she enjoys going to the beach, kayaking, going to the movies, traveling, and hanging out with her puppy, Burt Macklin.  Erin loves being an academic advisor because she gets to work with students who have a dream and then help them along the path to achieving that goal.  Helping students become successful in the field they are passionate about is so rewarding!

Shannon Pease has been an athletic advisor for 4 years.  She is from Binghamton, New York and earned her undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Seton Hall University.  Shannon earned her Master's in Adult and Higher Education from the University of Oklahoma.

She is passionate about seeing student-athletes grow as young adults and evolve over their four years at UNCW.  In her free time, Shannon loves to travel and relax on the beach.  She is also working on a personal goal of running a half marathon in each state.

Shannon loves being an academic advisor because she gets the opportunity to see student-athletes in a different light.  She really enjoys getting to see them as students and not just athletes and believes it is very special to see student-athletes graduate after 4 years of hard work.

Patti Schulz has been an advisor in University College for 1 year.  Prior to that she served in the College of Health and Human Services for 11 years.  She is a from Horseheads, New York and earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology from Houghton College, New York.  Patti also earned a Master’s in Educational Psychology (Counseling) from Baylor University and a MBA from UNCW.

Patti is passionate about teaching, having been a Psychology instructor for over 22 years and teaching First-Year Seminar, UNI 101 at UNCW for over 5 years.  Her other greatest passions are volunteering her time and efforts to a wide array of activities and organizations.  She’s taught English to a migrant school in China and builds houses for Habitat for Humanity.  In her free time, Patti enjoys flying airplanes and wants to continue to taking flying lessons and pursue her pilot’s license.  Patti also has two dogs (Ruger and Piper) and she enjoys hiking with them.

Patti loves being an academic advisor because of the opportunity to work with students and be a part of their academic journey.  It’s exciting for her to help students find their academic and life passions and to be there as they follow their goals.

Leigh Smith

Leigh Smith joined University College as an Academic Advisor in July 2017.  Prior to working in University College, she worked in the Watson College of Education for 1½ years.  Leigh is from Salisbury, North Carolina.  During her undergraduate career at North Carolina State University, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business and Marketing Education and a minor in Business Administration. Leigh earned a Master of Education in College Counseling and Student Development from North Carolina State University.

Leigh is passionate about making a positive difference in everyone’s life that she meets. She believes that small acts of kindness can make a difference in others’ lives more than you can imagine. Leigh loves being an academic advisor because she enjoys advising students to aid in their success and assist them in reaching their educational, career, and personal goals.  She has embraced the opportunity to continue her work with the students, faculty, and staff at UNCW, along with NC Community Colleges.

Outside of work, Leigh enjoys taking her dogs to the beach, traveling and spending time on the water with family and friends.  She enjoys taking trips on the ICW with her pups, Streak and Oki.

Dr. Zack Underwood has been an academic advisor in University College for 5 years.  He is a native of Asheboro, North Carolina and earned an undergraduate degree in Communication Studies and Recreation and Leisure Studies from UNC-Chapel Hill.  Zack also earned a Master's of Education in Higher Education Administration from UNC-Greensboro, a Master's of Arts in Educational Media from Appalachian State University, and a Ph.D. in Learning Technologies from the University of North Texas.

Zack is passionate about problem solving academic advising situations and technological conundrums. He also teaches UNI courses (freshmen and transfer students) and Honors courses about selected topics such as film and video game research. He enjoys helping students to have light-bulb moments where they are able to connect previous and current life lessons.  In his free time, Zack enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons, watching cheesy movies (the worst he can find), listening to records, reading sci-fi novels, watching UNC basketball, and fishing in the ocean.

Keryn Vickers has been an academic advisor in University College for 5 years and has been at UNCW for 11 years.  He is from the Bronx, New York and earned his undergraduate degree in Communication Arts and Sciences from DePauw University in Indiana.  Keryn also earned a Master’s degree in Recreation and Sports Management from Indiana State University.  He is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in Education Leadership Higher Education from UNCW and expects to graduate soon.

Keryn is passionate about his belief and faith in Jesus Christ and about his family – especially his children, Gavrielle and Giovanni.  In his free time, Keryn likes to spend time with his family, children, and significant others; travel; preach; and conduct ministry.  He also enjoys playing basketball, working on his dissertation, and learning as much as he can.

Carly Wilson

Carly Wilson has been an advisor in University College for ten years.  She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Pennsylvania State University.  She earned a Master’s of Science Education from Old Dominion University.  There are so many quotes by Eleanor Roosevelt that sum up her passion but the one that rings most true for her is, “Do the things that interest you and do them with all your heart.  Don’t be concerned about whether people are watching you or criticizing you.  The chances are they aren’t paying any attention to you.”

She enjoys activities that enrich her mind and body such as beach volleyball, scuba diving, swimming, biking, running, knitting, reading, and yoga.  Carly also spends time exposing her twin boys to new experiences and adventures.  Finally, Carly is drawn to academic advising because she values the benefits of life-long learning.  She is able to work individually with students to discover their talents and interests so that they can choose the academic path that will keep them most engaged and prepared for life before and after graduation.

Kristen Nice, M.A.

Kristen Nice has been a Business Services Coordinator in University College for 7 ½ years but at UNCW for nearly 10 years.  She is from the mitten state (Michigan), and she studied at Western Michigan University, Northern Illinois University, and the University of Northern Iowa as a Performance Theater major but later changed her focus to a BFA in Studio Art.  Kristen also earned a Master’s Degree in Liberal Studies from UNCW.

As a dedicated yogini, she is passionate about expanding her mind and striving for balance in her own life, as well as facilitating others in their journey on and off the mat.  Sthira Sukham Asanam.

Emily Morgan has been an Administrative Associate in University College for 1 year however she has been at UNCW for a total of 3 years including undergraduate career.  She is from the foothills region and is currently pursuing her undergraduate degree from UNCW. 

She is passionate about life-long learning and the pursuit of knowledge for both personal and professional reasons.  Emily is especially enthusiastic about politics and historic leaders from around the globe.  In her free time, Emily enjoys traveling to new places and connecting with nature, especially by view of her kayak.
