The Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence Award is the most prestigious award conferred at UNCW.
The purpose of the award is to underscore the importance of teaching and to encourage, identify, recognize, reward, and support excellence in teaching and teaching-related activities across the University.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Full-time faculty (EHRA-Faculty) with at least ten years of teaching at UNCW (not necessarily consecutive)
- Currently teaching at least half of a normal teaching load, as defined by the college/school
- Faculty nominated for multiple teaching awards in the same year may submit materials for only one award
Criteria for Nomination and Selection:
Nominees are evaluated on long-term, institution-wide impact and leadership in teaching, including:
- A record of sustained excellence and innovation in undergraduate and graduate teaching
- Enduring contributions to pedagogy, curriculum, or academic programs with broad or lasting impact
- Leadership in advancing teaching excellence beyond the individual classroom (e.g., mentoring faculty, leading initiatives, shaping teaching culture)
- Significant and sustained mentoring of students and colleagues
- Influence on teaching practices within the department, college, university, or profession
- Educational service demonstrating long-term commitment to UNCW's mission
- Recognition as a faculty member whose teaching has had a transformative impact on students and the academic community

Selection Process:
- A review committee appointed by Teaching, Learning and Library Services (TLLS) reviews nominations and selects a recipient
